This is the web log to see things that I find interesting.

I am changing how I use my web logs. I have too many blogs to keep current so I am consolidating my blogs.
I will no longer update, on a regular basis, any of my other web logs. I will post to these web logs when I update web sites or have specific information that is relevant.

The Online Photographer: Calcutta

The Online Photographer: Calcutta

Calcutta (Kolkata) is the most amazing place I have ever been. I was overwhelmed. These are excellent photographs from Calcutta, what is interesting to me is how the perspective is very different from what fascinated me. The buildings, the signs, the technology, the context of all the activity, and the wonderful overwhelming chaos and energy was what mesmerized me. These photographs focus on the people.

Captured: America in Color from 1939-1943 – Plog Photo Blog

Captured: America in Color from 1939-1943 – Plog Photo Blog

I love black and white photography, most of our images of America, in the past, are black and white. These photographs show what are normally black and white images in color. The emotional affect is different, to me, at least initially, the impact is muted. In some cases the photographs are a Kodak moment that hides the economic reality of the times.

Awesome and sort of scary, that a person's life work could be discovered by accident.

On A Leash

On A Leash

I love this posting, the descriptions of the inspiration for the photographs resonants with me. Beautiful photographs can really be boring to take and also look at. The student letters are both interesting and depressing.

A Photographer Is "Banned" for Taking Pictures on Church Street | Seven Days

A Photographer Is "Banned" for Taking Pictures on Church Street | Seven Days

I think there is more to this story then what is being printed. It is important for photographers to protect their rights, but it is also important not to be a jerk, but even jerks have rights, in facts rights are to protect jerks! There are many issues here.

Reflections: Ajahn Sucitto: Knowing Where You Are

This is a deep discussion of many of the perplexing things that I experience in Thailand, especially for an aging moderately rebellious ex-hippie.

Confession of a Buddhist Atheist: Stephen Batchelor

Every once in awhile I read a book that I feel in "sync" with. Many of the questions and struggles that were provoked by my experience in Bodhagaya and in Thailand are shared in this book. A similar history of phenomenology and existentialism provides another shared context. My skepticism of Karma and of re-birth are also shared. It is confirming sometimes to read a book that "makes sense". I have wanted to talk about this experience, in a sense this book provides the discussion.

Izabella Demavlys Photography

Izabella Demavlys Photography

From her BIO
I strongly believe that beauty is impossible to define solely by appearance. To illustrate deeper definition of female beauty, I photograph women whose pictorial beauty radiates from their accomplishment, character and personal struggles.

The Pakistan>Without a face series is horrifying. I can not comprehend how people could do this to each other.

Masters of Photography: Clarence John Laughlin

Masters of Photography: Clarence John Laughlin

CLARENCE JOHN LAUGHLIN'S DESCRIPTIONS OF HIS PHOTOGRAPHIC GROUPS

This is really interesting, I play with different ways to group my photography, subject, geography, time, intent, emotion, quality, etc. I have made lists like this, once I was going to create a database, a long time ago, and made lists of properties for my photographs. I need to try again to come up with different groups.

Clarence John Laughlin was one of my favorite photographers, I have a few of his books from many years ago. I need to explore his images again. I feel an affinity for what he is doing.

If you use Flickr this is an amazing application. You can create many different predefined searches. Every once in awhile an application is a revelation and opens up completely new ways of viewing photographs. I love this application!!

From the Desk of David Pogue - Why We Make Home Videos - NYTimes.com

This also applies to family or community still photographs. Time changes the meaning of the images, or videos, that we capture.

I try to think 30 years ahead when I take photographs. What will be important in 30 years? How we look at old photographs now will help in deciding what photographs to take now that will be valuable in 30 years.

Horrifying and desperate! When people lose faith in justice, or order, and are left with no recourse, but might, we can become pretty frightening.

I'm a Photographer, not a Terrorist

I'm a Photographer, not a Terrorist

I have had to deal with crazy restrictions a few times, the worst was at the Tanana Valley Farmer's Margaret in Fairbanks. Some vendor was worried that I would steal her jewelry designs. It was like I invaded a family, even though it was a public event.

Op-Ed Columnist - Is China the Next Enron? - NYTimes.com

Here is a different, much more optimistic, analysis of China's housing inflation. The Alaska housing crisis in the eighties had little impact on the rest of the USA. Maybe the absurd Chinese real estate development, that I have posted about previously, will have little international impact.

The Alaska terns obviously take a different path, but there journey is amazing. I love to watch the Terns when they arrive in Alaska, they are amazing, and beautiful, birds.

Earthquake in Haiti - The Big Picture - Boston.com

These photographs make the earthquake experience real. Very intense. To me, still photographs have more power to describe then the video that I see on TV. Maybe it allows me time to feel, reflect, and feel again.

The City of Ordos Is the Ghost City of the Future - Ordos - Gizmodo

This is pretty scary, after watching the Alaska collapse in the eighties the Thailand collapse in the nineties, and the US collapse last year, I wonder about the China collapse.
